Interior Wildlife Rehabilitation Society (IWRS)

Our FACILITY

Our wildlife rehabilitation facility in Summerland, BC

In 2021 a local Summerland family has generously allowed us to utilize 3 acres of their farm property to build our wildlife care facility on. Giving IWRS the support to be able to close the gap of a much needed multi-species wildlife rehabilitation centre in the Okanagan and Shuswap.

We serve all communities from Osoyoos to Salmon Arm. Our valley’s human population is growing, and so is the need for a licensed facility. Our focus is on native water birds (ducks and geese, coots, grebesloons, swans, herons etc.) and semi-aquatic small mammals (e.g. beaver, otter, muskrat) as well as bats. We also care for reptiles (painted turtles and snakes).

We are now leasing this beautiful undeveloped parcel and have purpose-built x4 modular indoor structures and x9 outdoor enclosures for various wildlife species to recover in.

Our species-specific housing aids in our work and includes various therapy pools for waterfowl, waders, shore birds, diving birds as well as native turtles and small mammals. BC’s wetland habitats are decreasing and we want to help those species living around the shores of our lakes, streams and bogs.

Our facility is government inspected and licensed provincially as well as federally.  We temporarily house wildlife for recovery until release. We solely care for wildlife until healthy again to get a second chance of life in the wild. No permanent wild residents.

We are NOT open to the public for visits or direct drop-offs. This is to protect hospitalized animals from stress while recovering.

If you would like to see our facilities, you can book a virtual tour or check out our web cameras we have installed in some enclosures.
