The Okanagan is divided into “service areas“ for carcass removal on highways:
District Office: Salmon Arm to Osoyoos (Okanagan-Shuswap District):
250 712-3660
Highway maintenance contractor’s office:
AIM Roads Inc 1 866 222-4204 (24hr hotline).
You can also submit a service request online to AIM: https://aim-roads.ca/service-request/
The cities of the Okanagan work with contractors to remove dead wildlife from city property including city parks and beaches. In Kelowna you can make a service request online by emailing the park’s department Parks4@kelowna.ca or calling the city’s animal control hotline: 250-492-3801 (Penticton).
In If a carcass needs removal from a private property, contact the closest city or district to you and ask for a contractor that you can hire to help. Private contractors can assist with carcass removal (Vernon) depending on your location and the species.
To report waterfowl (wild geese, ducks etc) with “neurological symptoms” including behaviour such as falling over, not able to walk, swimming in circles, twisting neck in a repetitive movement, yet without an obvious injury (such as bleeding or having been impaled by foreign objects), call:
1-866-431-(BIRD) 2473
to speak to the Environment Canada HPAI hotline (responsible for migratory birds). Environment Canada officers give priority to reports of 3 or more dead birds (of any species) found in the same geographic location and await instructions by an officer for collection/removal. Report your findings, chances are there are more in the same area.
DO NOT TOUCH a dead wild bird without PPE.
The federal and provincial governments are collaborating to monitor and investigate sick or dead wild birds.
The Canadian Wildlife Health Cooperative provides excellent info on current disease outbreaks in wildlife Canada-wide. Find fact sheets including Avian Flu information on their website.
Please see the BC Wild Bird Mortality Investigation Protocol handout for info and whom to contact at the provincial government about dead/dying birds (with bird flu symptoms):
